The Star Bucket Hat was inspired by, you guessed it, the 4th of July or Independence day in the USA! I wanted to make something to celebrate the birth of American independence and thought a Bucket Hat would be perfect for this occasion! 🙂

This Bucket Hat crochet pattern is an Intermediate crochet pattern. This sounds a bit daunting, but all you need is a little bit of extra concentration on reading and following the pattern. This bucket hat crochet pattern is made to fit the average adult head size. If you would like a smaller version, scroll down to the pattern notes where I explain how to make the hat smaller.

What Yarn Should I use?

I used #3 DK weight cotton yarn for this bucket hat. The Yarn I used is 100% cotton yarn. If you would like to use any other yarn like Acrylic you definitely can! That hat will then be perfect for chilly days!

I used Elle Cottons 100% cotton Yarn and also Elite Yarns Cotton Mix. If you reside in the US you can substitute with yarn like Bernat Softee Cotton Yarn or Patons Grace Yarn.

The Star Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern

This pattern is written in US Terms

Patten Level:

Intermediate – you will need some concentration.

Materials:

• 100% Cotton yarn, #3 DK light weight in the following colors:

• Size 3.5mm Hook (US E/4)
• Measuring tape
• Stitch Markers
• Tapestry Needle
• Scissors

Abbreviations:

• MR = Magic Ring
• Ch = Chain
• Sc = Single crochet
• Hdc = Half Double Crochet
• Dc = Double Crochet
• BLO = Back Loop Only
• FLO = Front Loop Only
• Inc = Increase
• Sk = skip
• Nxt = Next
• Sl st = Slip Stitch
• St(s) = Stitch(s)
• Rep = Repeat
• Rem = Remaining
• Frm = From
• Sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
• Hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 stitches together
• Dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together

Special Stitches:

Single crochet 2 together:

Insert your hook into center of your next stitch. Yarn over and draw through the chain stitch and up onto the hook so that you have two loops on your hook.
With those two loops on your hook, repeat step one into the next stitch. You will now have three loops on your hook.
Using your hook, grab yarn and draw it through all three loops on your hook, leaving just one loop on your hook. You’ve just single crocheted two stitches together. 

Half double crochet 2 together :

(Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop) repeat this one more time, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

Double crochet 2 together:

(Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2) repeat this one more time, yarn over and draw through all remaining loops on the hook.

Gauge:

2” x 2” / 5cm x 5cm = 7 rows x 9hdc

The square size is 3” x 3” / 8cm x 8cm.

If you have a very loose tension, you will need to size down a hook size to 2.5mm hook. It’s best to make a gauge square and measure it to be sure!

Finished Size:

Fits the average head size of an adult which is 57cm/22” – 60cm/23”.

Width x Length: 25cm/9” x 21cm/8”

Notes:

• This pattern is constructed out of squares that are sewn together which after is crocheted closed on the top and a brim is added at the end to form a bucket hat.
• Weave in all your ends as you go. This will make it much easier and quicker to finish your hat.
• When the pattern states – sc,hdc,dc etc; you will insert each stitch into its own individual st/ch. For example, sc in 1^st st, hdc in nxt st, dc into following stitch.
• When the pattern states – [1dc,ch2,1dc] or anything between [] – you will crochet everything shown between the parentheses into the same stitch.
• The amount of stitches at the end of the row or round is stated between brackets () at the end of the row/round.
• You can sew the squares together or crochet them together – it’s up to you!
• Top of hat and Brim: ch1 at the beg of rnds does not count as a stitch. You will work your 1^st stitch into the same stitch as ch1.
• If you would like to make this hat smaller, you can make less squares to fit your head measurement.

Before you begin ask yourself:

1. Did I read the all important notes for this pattern?
2. Do I have all of my materials?
3. Did I make a gauge swatch?

If yes, then you are ready and let’s get started!!

Star Square Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern:

Star Square Pattern:

Make 7 squares

With white yarn:

Rnd 1: 10sc into MR (or ch4, sl st to 1^st st & work 10sc into middle of circle), sl st to 1^st st to close (10)

Rnd 2: *ch5, 1sc into 2^nd ch frm hook, 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, sk 1 st, sl st into nxt st; rep frm * until end, you should end with 5 star points.

Finish off yarn and weave in all ends.

Connect dark blue / navy yarn to a top point of the star.

You will now work down the sides of the points.

Rnd 1: ch1, *1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, dc2tog (1^st side), 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc into top of the point; rep frm * unti end, sl st to 1^st sc to close rnd.

Rnd 2: ch1, 1sc in same st, 1sc in nxt st, *1hdc, 1dc, (1dc, ch1, 1dc) all in nxt st, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc in each of nxt 4sts; rep frm * until you reach the end of rnd, sl st to 1^st sc to connect rnd. (10 sts per side)

Rnd 3: ch1, 1 hdc in same st, 1hdc in each of nxt 4sts, * (1hdc, ch2, 1hdc) into corner sp, 1hdc in each st across until nxt corner sp; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st sc of rnd. (12sts per side)

Finish off yarn and weave in all ends.

Continue to make 7 squares. When all 7 squares are finished and tails are weave in, continue to next section which is the sewing section of the squares.

Connect the squares:

• Lay all 7 squares in front of you in a row with all the stars pointed in the same direction.
• You will start to connect them from left to right.
• Place the 1^st 2 squares on top of each other, with right sides facing each other. Now rotate the squares to the right / clockwise to work on the side of the squares.
• Inspect the squares.  You will see the ch2 of the corner sp on the right side, the ch on the furthest side is your 1^st ch you will work into.
• Cut roughly 26.5” of navy yarn and connect to your 1^st  st (you can cut 7 more pieces of yarn)
• Using your tapestry needle – insert the needle (connected to your yarn) into the front loop of the nxt st (of square facing you) and through the back loop of the back square.
• Pull yarn through the stitch.
• Continue to weave your yarn with the same technique through the following stitches until the end. (catch the front loop of the front square and the back loop of the back square)

At the end of the row, go through all loops of the lasat stitch. You can weave in your ends or work them in as you go later.

You can also use your hook to connect the squares with sl sts using the same method.

(the tapestry needle just looks neater and gives a better result for me personally, as always, it’s up to you!)

When you’re finished connecting your 1^st squares, lay them back next to your other squares making sure the stars point the same direction again. (Front side facing you)

• Now you will  repeat what you did with the first squares, you will connect the nxt (3^rd square) to the first two squares.
• Continue to connect all of the squares.
• When all squares are connected, sow the 1^st and last squares together using the same method, making sure the right sides face each other when sewing them together to form a circle (at this stage you can try on the circle on your head to see if it fits!
• Now, flip the squares over so the right sides face outward / you.

Move on to the nxt section – closing the top of the hat.

Close the top of the hat:

With navy / dark blue yarn:

Connect your yarn to the top of your squares (stars pointing up) where two squares meet.

Rnd 1: chl, * 1sc in each of nxt 12 sts , sc2tog into the corner spces over the nxt 2 squares; rep frm * until you reach the beg again.  At the end, sl st to the 1^st sc of rnd (90 sc)

Rnd 2: Working in blo this rnd, chl, *1 hdc in each of the following 7 sts, hdc2tog; rep frm * until last st of rnd, sl st to 1^st st (80 hdc)

Rnd 3: chl, 1hdc in each of nxt 3 sts, hdc2tog, * 1hdc in nxt 6 sts, hdc2tog; rep frm * until 3 sts rem, 1hdc in rem sts, sl st to 1^st st (70hdc)

Rnd 4: chl, *1hdc in each of nxt 5 sts, hdc2tog; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st (60hdc)

Rnd 5: chl, 1hdc in each at nxt 2sts, hdc2tog, *1hdc in nxt 4 sts, hdc2tog; rep frm * until 2sts rem, sl st to 1^st st (50hdc)

Rnd 6: chl, * 1hdc in each of following 3sts, hdc2tog; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st (40hdc)

Rnd 7: chl, 1hdc, hdc2tog, *1hdc in each of nxt 2sts, hdc2tog; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st (30hdc)

Rnd 8: chl, *1hdc, hdc2tog; rep frm * until end of  rnd, sl st to 1^st st (20hdc)

Rnd 9: chl, *hdc2tog over nxt 2sts; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st (10hdc)

Finish off yarn and weave tail through the front loops of the last row and pull tight to close rnd. Weave in all loose ends and move on to brim portion of hat.

Brim:

With white yarn:

Connect yarn the same way as with the top portion of hat – only this time to the bottom squares. Your stars will be upside down.

Rnd 1: chl, *1sc in each of nxt 12sts, sc2tog into corner spaces over nxt 2 squares; rep frm * until you reach the beg of rnd, at the end sk 1 st / corner space and sl st to 1^st st of rnd to join (90sc)

Rnd 2: chl, 1hdc in each st around until you reach the end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st to join rnd (90 hdc)

Change color to red

Rnd 3: Working in FLO for this rnd, chl, 4hdc, inc, *1hdc in nxt 8 sts, inc; rep frm * until end where 4 sts will rem, 1hdc in each of rem 4 sts, sl st to 1^st st to join rnd (100 hdc)

Rnd 4: Work all sts from now on as normal, chl, *1hdc in nxt 9 sts, inc; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st (110 hdc)

Change color to white

Rnd 5: chl, 5hdc, inc, *1hdc in each of next 10 sts, inc; rep frm * until 5 sts rem, 1hdc in each of rem 5sts, sl st to 1^st st to join (120 hdc)

Rnd 6: chl, *1hdc in each of nxt 11 sts, inc; rep frm * until end of rnd, sl st to 1^st st to join (130 hdc)

Rnd 7&8: chl, 1 hdc in each st around, sl st to 1^st st to join (130 hdc)

Change color to white

Rnd 9: chl, 1 hdc in each st around, sl st to 1^st st to join (130 hdc)

At the end, finish off yarn and weave in all ends.
